![]() The Marion student population dipped a fraction - from 42,570 to 42,283 - between the fall of 2006 and the fall of 2007. Marion is the 17th largest of Florida's 67 school districts, according to the state Department of Education. "But since it was finished in the middle of the last half of the year, we didn't want to move the whole school." "It was finished exactly on time," said Robert Knight, the school district's facilities director. So, in the fall, there will be no more West Port Middle, and there will be more room at West Port High. Liberty will take all the middle school students from that campus, and West Port High will inherit the middle school buildings. School officials are counting on Liberty to help ease overcrowding at West Port High, which shares a campus with West Port Middle. Liberty is scheduled to open in August for the 2008-09 school year.ĭudley isn't the only person happy to see the $36 million campus in such good shape.
